About the event
Welcome past students, past staff, friends and families of Oxford Area School and Oxford Schools. In 1872 a resident's meeting was called to discuss the desirability of applying to the Education Board for a school. The East Oxford School opened in the old Baptist Church on the 16th of September 1872, and from there began the journey of Oxford Schools (extract from “The Centenary of the Oxford School”). Over time, the Secondary Department of East Oxford grew, then West Oxford, Carleton, Woodside, View Hill Plains, Kiri Kiri, Rockford and Ashley Gorge.
We are very proud of this rich history of Oxford Schools educating and preparing young people for the world they entered. From games to the heavy snow in 1918, the hail storm of 1898 to the first car in Oxford to the influenza epidemic of 1918 through to COVID-19. . All schools were the “community centres” for people around them. History is rich in the Oxford community.
One hundred fifty years ago, the Oxford Schools focused on our community working with and for the local district. Today nothing has changed as Oxford Area School (renamed in 1978) still stands today to serve the community where we are situated. A place where we develop our young people into shining stars, where we grow together, learn together and shine together.
We warmly welcome you to this celebration of 150 years of educating the young people of our community.
