Oxford is a small country town known for its
tranquil rural setting, nestled at the base of the Oxford foothills, with many bush walks and tramps and worth a visit. for its Boutique shops, cafes and country atmosphere. The Puketeraki Range is its backdrop and spectacular views of the Southern Alps can be seen from vantage points. It has a residential population of approximate 2000 people and about 1,500 in the wider rural district.
Oxford is an ideal place to stop when travelling the Inland Scenic Route 72. Stay a while and Experience Oxford. Its also a great day out from Christchurch, travelling via Tram Road and return via Waimakariri Gorge and Old West Coast Road.
The area was renowned for its native beech trees and as a food gathering place for Maori.
Oxford was originally named after the city of Oxford, England, when it was thought that a university would be built here.
Oxford is the doorway to the West Coast, Kaikoura, Hanmer, Methven,Geraldine, Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook and beyond. A place to recharge your batteries and relax. The area offers a large range of recreational, leisure activities and a wide range of services.
